SHAWVER JR'S 2ND LATE MODEL TRIUMPH IS ON ARCH NIGHT,
AXTELL JR'S, DILLON AND THOMAS ALSO WIN
Hagerstown, Md. – There was an “almost” for Al Shawver Jr. already this year at Hagerstown Speedway, but Saturday night the Hampstead, Md. late model driver made it happen on ARCH (Auto Racing Club of Hagerstown) night as he passed Alan Sagi on the third lap and later scored his career second victory by .623 seconds over Roy Deese Jr. who passed Sagi in a final two lap dash.
“I knew Alan Sagi was coming as I was getting worse as he probably was getting better,” Shawver said. “ A couple weeks back, that seemed the way the race went then and he and I got racing pretty hard. I made a driver error and crashed the car with about a lap to go, so I knew I wasn’t going to make that mistake once I got out front this time.”
Other winners included Steve Axtell Jr. of Glen Burnie, Md. who started from fifth and took the lead from Scott Palmer on the seventh circuit to later score his fourth career Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman feature over Bruce Kane by 2.167 seconds. Kenny Dillon of Hanover, Pa began from the outside pole and led all the way to score his 22nd career Ernie D’s pure stock triumph by 5.69 seconds over Brian Miller. In the third Enduro Dash of the season, it was Krazy Kenny Thomas of Keedysville, Md. back in victory lane for the third consecutive time for a 5.22 second margin of victory over Mark Vegh.
Sagi pulled out to the late model lead over Jerry Bard but third starter Shawver took second on the second circuit and began pressuring Sagi and had just passed him before the first caution waved when Rick Hulson coasted to a stop on lap five.
Shawver then took off on the restart and pulled out to better than a three second lead by the tenth circuit while Mike Lupfer, Deese and Gary Stuhler were advancing towards the runner up spot.
Shawver’s still over three second lead was erased on the 20th when Kyle Hardy rolled to a stop and then again on the 23rd circuit when Billy Wampler also had problems and stopped.
Shawver maintained control for the final laps while Sagi was trying to hold to the runner up spot but Deese Jr. got around him on the final circuit. Frankie Plessinger earlier moved into fourth while Tyler Hershey, who earlier dropped to eighth, rebounded back into fifth prior to the final caution. Lupfer ended sixth while Brian Booze, Stuhler, Marvin Winters and Bard completed the top ten. Bard, Deese and Sagi were the heat winners.
Scott Palmer took control of the HTMA late model sportsman feature while sixth starting Axtell was past Nick Pappas for second when a pile up on the front stretch began before the flag stand with some contact exiting the fourth corner in the front rows with 11th starter Glenn Elliott taking the brunt of the damage along with Wayne Walls Jr. who started eighth.
On the restart, Palmer held onto the lead until the seventh circuit when Axtell make his pass in the fourth turn. Axtell was out front nearly two seconds when the caution appeared on lap 12. Kane took over the second spot following the green flag but Axtell was edging away with each circuit and Kane settled for the runner up spot while Palmer, Terry Flaherty and Mike Walls completed the top five. Walls was the Checkered Flag/St. Thomas Towing hard charger after starting 22nd. Flaherty, Axtell and Pete Weaver won the heats while Walls was the consolation winner.
“This thing was really hooked up,” Axtell said. “We got a new engine today… put a 358 back in it.”
Dillon pulled from the outside to lead Eddie McClellan in the pure stock feature and was out front more than three seconds when McClellan had a flat and exited to the pits on the 11th circuit as Brian Miller took over the position but was well behind as the race was going non-stop.
“I never won one without a caution,” Dillon said. “I’m sorry if it wasn’t that good of a race. Last week we put on a pretty good show for the fans. I’m just happy to be here again.”
Two time winner Mike Warrenfeltz ended third with previous week’s winner, Steve Lowery next and earning the Turner Dual Lanes hard charger award again while Dave Stouffer Jr. ended fifth. Charlie Pensinger, Dillon and Stouffer won the heats.
William Crook led the enduro while pole sitter Mark Vegh battled for the top spot and took the point on the tenth circuit. Thomas was coming from the rear and moved into second two laps later. He caught and passed Vegh on the 16th lap and then drove away to a 5.22 second win. Kenny Thomas ended third over Bryan Green and Danny Holmes.
Following a weekend off for the Hagerstown City Firefighters Bonanza Extravaganza, racing resumes on Saturday, May 15 with the World of Outlaw Late Model Series arriving at the speedway to take on the areas best late model drivers. The Ernie De’s pure stocks are also included on the program. Check the speedway website for any changes in the weather at: www.hagerstownspeedway.com or contact the speedway office at 301-582-0640.
