LEE LASSO'S BOUNTY; DUNCAN DOMINATES HILLTOP'S L.M.'S
Millersburg, Ohio
May 1, 2010
By Mike Swanger
With rain all around the area, just a few drops fell on Hilltop Speedway Saturday as it turned into a beautiful night for racing on Chaplain's Trophy Night sponsored by Jerry and Ruth Reed. The big attraction for the evening was the $300 bounty on Kevin Morehouse in the Snyder Brothers Tri-State Modifieds feature and could someone stop the 'Logger' from winning his fifth straight. Dash winner George 'the General' Lee would start on the pole of the feature with Jess Hartman alongside. Lee would grab the lead at the start with fourth starting Morehouse applying the pressure on Hartman for second. With those two running hard for second, Lee opened up a comfortable lead as first heat winner Norm Aronhalt and fast qualifier Larry Kugel closed in on Morehouse for third. That would give Hartman some breathing room for second but Lee and his Cowen Truck Line, Auto Value, and Tiger Rear Ends #27c had built up more than a half straightaway lead as the Loudonville driver won for the first time this year and collects the bounty. Morehouse held off Aronhalt's attempts for third while Kugel finished fifth. Aaron Phillis won the second heat.
Going from fourth to first in less than a lap and collecting the dash win in the Super Late Models, Justin Chance started the feature on the pole but it was Millersburg's Charlie Duncan winning the race into turn one at the drop of the green in the 25 lap main and the Hall's Auto Sales and igimages.com #240 would not be caught for his first victory of the season and his first ever Super Late Model win at Hilltop Speedway to add to a win in the Modifieds a couple years ago. The fans eyes were on the race for second as Chance and Anthony Kincaid went back and fourth for second with Chance winning out for second. Starting 12th, Bryan Casey once again worked his way through the field to take fourth as Courtney Clewell filled outh the top five. Jeremy Canada and Wayne Maffett Jr. topped the heats as Dave Hornikel was the quick timer.
Galion's Todd Swim held off early challenges by John Wilson in the Street Stock main and put the JR Dowell Trucking, Beaver Petroleum, and White Racing Engines #44 into victory circle for the second week in a row. Kenny Daugherty Jr. and Denny Shear picked their way through the field as Daugherty Jr. took second from Wilson with four circuits to go and Shear made a last lap pass for third to put Wilson back to fourth as Donna Canode rounded out the top five. Joe Spearman and Swim won the heats.
The 'Action Class' lived up to it's name as Jordan James of Loudonville took the lead on lap four from previous winner Brad Hensel to post his first Holmes Tire Mini Stock win of the year. Hensel and Mitch Ling each kept the heat on James through out the feature. Ten different drivers had positions in the top five during the race but at the drop of the checkered flag, Jerry Adkins and Josh Gentry followed James, Hensel and Ling across the finish line. Hensel and James notched the heat wins.
In the closest race of the night, heat winners John Large and Jerry Gardner started on the pole of the Circle Track Mini Truck feature with Large leading the pack at the start and Rolly Heyder sliding into second in front of Gardner who would reclaim second on lap five. Large and Gardner would run truckbed to truckbed for the last seven laps and as they crossed the finish line, the Millersburg based L & L Motors and Advance Auto Parts #17 of Large won by a bumper. Heyder held onto third with Tom Garlick and Jack Large fourth and fifth.
Tanner Johnson won the Mini Wedge main over Cole Lillibridge and Tristen Lillibridge.
All six divisions will be in action next Saturday night, May 8th with the Ohio Outlaw Motorsports adding to the excitement with a Quad Qualifier. Then the next week, May 15th, the O'Reilly All Star Late Models pull in for a $4,000 to win event. Gates open at 4 pm. and racing begins at 7:30 pm. every Saturday night at Hilltop.
