NELSON, LANGE, TAYLOR, GUNN FIND VICTORY LANE AT THUNDER HILL After rain being the victor at Thunder Hill Speedway on April 24, the track’s management and racers were looking for a good, smooth night of races on the first night of May, and they got it. With the track preparation difficulties of opening night behind them, fans were treated to a competitive night of IMCA racing that started on time and ended before 10 PM. Marysville’s Jordy Nelson made the haul down US-75 worthwhile as he captured his first Thunder Hill IMCA Modified feature. Nelson pulled away from the pack and missed some excellent racing behind him, as a group including John Kampsen, Tom Charles, Justin Becker, and Travis Patch battled for position in the top five. At the checkered, Nelson was followed to the flag by Patch, Kampsen, Becker, and Charles, with Allen Halderman just missing a top-five spot. The number 17 appeared to be good luck Saturday night, as long time Thunder Hill competitor Tim Lange brought his #17 Camaro home in first place in the IMCA Stock Car feature. Some hairy moments happened midway through the feature as early contender Marvin Griffith, Jr. had part of the rear end center section blow off the car, ending his night. Unfortunately Greg Deters hit the debris, which ended his night as well. Behind Lange, Jim Powell finished second, with Matt Haid, Eric Weyer, and Tony Noll rounding out the top five. The number 17 was also the number to have in the IMCA Northern SportMod feature, as past Thunder Hill Late Model and Factory Stock winner Mike Taylor took his #17 to the front and was really never headed for the victory. Like Nelson, Taylor missed some great action, as Kyle Olberding, Eddie Schwope Jr, Joey Schwope, and Chris Dishong traded the 2-5 spots, in some instances going three-wide. At the line, that was the finishing order � Oldberding, E. Schwope, J. Schwope, and Dishong. The race that had everyone talking on Opening Night was the close battle between Brian Stich and Levi Gunn in the IMCA Hobby Stock Feature. Saturday night could have been summed up as, “Same excitement, different winner,” as Gunn and Stich battled for the entire feature. This time, Levi put his #7D machine in the winner’s circle over Stich, with John Bass, Donnie Devers, and Jim Streeter rounding out the top five. Next Saturday, May 8, will see the first special event of the season at Thunder Hill, as the Midwest Mod-Lites join the four IMCA Weekly Series classes. Gates open at 4:00 PM, with the driver’s meeting set for 6:15. Hot laps will hit the track at 6:30, with the first heat at 7:00 PM. Pit passes will be $25.00. Grandstand general admission is $10.00, Seniors 65 and up are $8.00 each, kids 6-12 are $5.00, and kids 5 and under are free. Thunder Hill Speedway is located at 11995 142nd Road in Mayetta, KS (2 miles West of US-75 and 142nd Road).
