Mahle, Reynolds, Bowman, and Holly Jones visit Victory Lane in El Paso

(El Paso, Texas)-Its winter in spring as the Mercury was hanging low at the El Paso Speedway Park as the UMP DIRTcar West Modifieds headlined the nights racing events with the West Texas Street Stocks, Southwest Super Trucks, and the Legends.

The Southwest Super Trucks were up first with the Robinson Racecars 6 of Walton Kyle Sr. grabbing the early lead. While the 6 showed the way, the battle mid pack was a wild one as the 29 of Thomas Mahle worked low to run four wide and three wide as the Eifel, Germany native began to work his way through the field into third. With Mahle now third, the battle for second would be a good one as the NAPA 44L of Ishmael Garcia and the 29 of Mahle battle side by side before it became a three truck battle for the race lead as Walton Kyle Sr. began to slow. Side by side, the UniFirst 29 of Thomas Mahle would grab the race lead, with the 55 of Walton Kyle Jr. from the back making the pass for second on his father, Walton Kyle Sr. As the laps clicked off, the 29 worked to a half straight advantage over the 55 of Walton Kyle Jr. Into fourth, the 1 of Dave Deetz made a few last lap moves with the 241 of Dylan Alberson in tow but as the checkered flag waved, the 29 of Tomas Mahle would come out on top with Walton Kyle Jr. second. A last lap pass would put Dave Deetz third with Walton Kyle Sr. and Dylan Alberson rounding out the top five.

The Legends of the Southwest saw the 54 of Dylan Harris grab the lead from the front row but the car to watch early on was the 3d of Don Reynolds as the Alamogordo driver charged from eight to third within two laps of racing. As Harris continued to lead, the Scott Martin M.D. 85 of Vince Malone continued to run in a solid second as the next car to watch was Allan Gattis in the ClimaCab 21, as the rookie driver moved into fourth before the caution waved for debris on the track. The double file restart with the AA Steel 54 of Dylan Harris showing the way, the field roared back to life with the 54 again pulling away as the battle for third shaped up between Allan Gattis and the 3d of Don Reynolds with Gattis taking third and then going after Vince Malone for second but the 85m would be to strong as Malone held second before the caution waved again for two cars who spun off turn two. Back to green flag racing, the VP Race Fuels 54 of Harris would proceed to run away yet again as the 21 of Allan Gattis raced into second over Vince Malone as the defending National Champion would remain unchallenged for the remainder of the race. Allan Gattis would claim second with Vince Malone, Don Reynolds, and Alvie Williams rounding out the top five.

Car counts continue to be a problem for the West Texas Street Stocks, but that doesn’t seem to matter as the green flag would see the battle kick off in a big way with Julian Garcia leading early but the car to watch early on was Kalvin Catlin who was racing all the way from Phoenix, Arizona. Catlin with some early moves would move into third. Back up front, the 77g of Julian Garcia would slow as the 15x of Sean Bowman made the pass for the lead. Back in the field, the 17 of Chris Mijares would race into the top five over the 12 of Debbie Jo Baxter before the caution waved. On the restart, the 6c of Catlin would restart in second to the outside on the double file restart with Ozzie Noder to the inside and on the move. Side by side, the 88 would run to the low side on the 15x of Sean Bowman to grab the lead with the 6c of Catlin throwing his name in the mix to make it a three car battle, but the 6c would spin to force out the caution. Back to green flag racing, the 88 of Ozzie Noder continued to work on a possible fourth win in a row but it wasn’t going to happen if Sean Bowman had anything to say about it as the 15x worked all over the 88 in a good side by side battle with to reclaiming the race lead and the win with Ozzie Noder in a close second. Debbie Jo Baxter would take third with Mark Kimpel, and Kalvin Catlin coming back to round out the top five.

Despite light numbers in the UMP DIRTcar West Modifieds, the talent was still as stout as ever as Cody Alvarez and Jacob Gallardo led the field to the start of 25 laps of racing with Gallardo leading early on. Up to second, Holly Jones would pull the slide job on Cody Alvarez with Curt Barnett in tow on the high line to move up to third. Up front, the battle for the race lead saw the 121 of Holly Jones stalking the J17 of Jacob Gallardo as the Mesilla Valley Transportation 121 dove to the low line; grabbing the race lead. Up to second, the Barnett Harley Davidson 43 of Curt Barnett was running high, wide, and handsome as the El Paso racer moved in ever so slightly on the 121 of Jones. Within a car length, the 43 looked like he had the 121’s number as Barnett moved side by side with Jones after a brief challenge by Jacob Gallardo. Wheel to wheel, Barnett worked the high line as he continued to run wheel to wheel with Jones before falling off Speedway Park just before the caution waved; saving Barnett a lot of grief. Back to the restart with only ten laps to go, Barnett was all over Holly Jones as the 43 worked back to the high line grabbing the lead, losing the lead, only to grab the lead again, and then lose it again as the 121 of Holly Jones had the fangs out and the claws dug in, sticking the 121 firmly on the low line; switching lines for only a moment to kill Barnett’s momentum on the high side with only three laps to go. Running her Skyrocket 121 for all it was worth, Jones would pull away to a slight advantage as the raced closed to within 2 laps of the checkered flag. Side by side now the battle would be for second as Jacob Gallardo battle back to run down Curt Barnett but as the checkered flag waved, Holly Jones would score her first UMP DIRTcar West Modified A-Main event win with Curt Barnett hanging onto second. Jacob Gallardo would take third with Jake Boles running up to fourth after starting dead last on the field. Christy Georges would round out the top five.
