Duncan Claims Second OVSCA Race at Skyline

Danny Smith leads points Series, OVS falls to Rain

By Scott Wolfe

STEWART, OHIO- In the two weeks of the infant Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association series, big name drivers and great racing have highlighted the action. Friday was no exception as second generation driver Cole Duncan, Grove City, Ohio held off a late race charge from original outlaw Danny Smith to claim the second-ever race of the series, a 25-lap/$1,500 to win affair at Skyline Speedway.

Youngster Cole Duncan, Grove City, Ohio drove like a veteran in claiming the second-ever OVSCA 25-lap feature over last week's winner Danny Smith. Cole fired up the 'coals' in the power plant of the family owned #22 and began a charge to victory. By the halfway mark, Duncan had run into lapped traffic, where he did a superb job of distancing himself from the field. Several early moves saw Duncan slip through quickly closing holes that ultimately closed the door on Smith's chase.

Andre Layfield, former Rocket-man (Rocket Chassis), just up from the modifieds poised himself a one of the series 'young guns' while running a solid third. A broken torque tube hindered his run late in the race, squelching what would have been a stellar run for the young rising star.

On lap 16, veteran Greg Mitchell clipped the turn three tires and did a few endo's before landing upright. The caution bunched up the field, putting lapped cars to the end of the pack for a 9-lap shoot-out to the finish. Josh Davis, OVSCA frontrunner, got a great jump and challenged Smith for second, perhaps giving Duncan the break he needed to outrun Smith to the checkered. Davis chased Smith for a trio of laps before Smith once again got the groove and gave a bonified chase of Duncan.

In the last half of race fourth place Aaron Higgins advanced five spots as did teammate Jimmy Stinson, putting two Billy Jarrell cars in the top five. Higgins edged Davis out for third, while Kory Crabtree, Andre Layfield, and Sam Ashworth all put on a great show to finish in the top ten. Behind winning Duncan were Smith, Higgins, Davis, Stinson, Crabtree, Layfield, Ashworth and a hard charging Brian Benson.

Higgins made it his second week in a row on leave from his NASCAR Modified stint in California. Crabtree had his second consecutive solid run in the series, while Ashworth shined in his first-ever visit to the Southern Ohio oval.

Duncan, the Grove City High School senior said, "It's our first win of the season. We like what the series (OVSCA) is doing, but we are going to also hit some other big races across the area. Tonight, I knew if I could hit my spots and hold my line on the bottom, I would be ok. I tried to save the tires under the yellow, and have some rubber under me at the end. I think that made the difference."

Ohio Valley Speedway notes:

Wayne McPeek's Ohio Valley Speedway opened its gates despite the threat of imminent Thunder showers, which visually decimated the numbers in the field. The quality, however, was 'Grade A' in the 16-car line-up. The track was tacky and near perfect as hot laps and heat racing times slipped into the low 13-second range on the fast, paperclipped 3/8 mile.

Wheeling popping green-to-checkered caution-free heats highlighted the action. Heat winners were as follows: Heat One: Sam Ashworth, Jimmy Stinson, Jason Dolick, Wayne McPeek, Chris Myers, Greg Mitchell, Shawn Hilbert, Bryan Benson; Heat Two: Danny Smith, Kory Crabtree, Andre Layfield, Dave Dickson, Bryce Dickson, Josh Davis, Billy Jarrell, Eddie Miller.

Because of the rain out, Ohio Valley Speedway will hold double features on May 15. That was already a double-header weekend for the series, which now will host three features for the weekend.

All OVSCA races pay at least $1,500 to win and $200 to start with at least one monthly special event that features a bolstered purse structure. Points will be kept for all drivers. The top 20 in points will be awarded a cash award at the end of the season with a season champion to be crowned.
