Hunter Stewart Finishes Top Five in First Ever Racing Season; Mom Finishes Cancer Treatments
Lake Elsinore (CA)
Wednesday December 26, 2007
At just 8-years old, Hunter Stewart finished his first-ever racing season in the MMR/SXS National Championship Off-Road Series at Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park in Lake Elsinore, California. Hunter piloted the no.16 Susan G. Komen for the Cure Trophy Kart to 4th place over 25 total competitors in the final championship point standings. He was leading the last race of the series in search of his first win until the final lap when contact caused him to roll over. Despite the incident he was able to get back on all four wheels and finish out the race. It was his determination to finish each race that led to the top five in overall points.
Hunter's best finish of the year was in the first race of the season when he finished 3rd taking home his first-ever trophy. Although victory lane eluded the young rookie driver this year, he won the hearts of many fans through his dedication and inspiration towards fighting breast cancer. The same year Hunter began to compete in racing his Mom (Alycia Stewart) started her own competition against stage-2 breast cancer. Being a sensitive and thoughtful child Hunter wanted to take action to help his Mom. In school he was learning about scientists and found a way he could contribute to cancer research through his racing.
In his words…"I want to help the scientists so they can get rid of cancer for my Mom and other Mom's won't have to have Cancer anymore."
For each lap he completed in 2007 he will donate his weekly allowance of $5.00. His actions inspired others to take action. Many of his fellow competitors made donations collected through the MMR racing series (Sanctioning body for Trophy Karts). The media took notice of Hunter's efforts and he made several appearances on local and national television news stations. He also received letters from local and state public officials. The Nationally Syndicated Ellen DeGeneres Show heard about Hunter and invited him on the show as a special guest during breast cancer awareness month in October. On the show Hunter and his Mom were surprised by Ellen who sent both on a trip to Talladega Super Speedway for a NASCAR race and meet and greet with NASCAR Drivers Tony Stewart (Home Depot no.20) and Elliot Sadler (Dodge Dealers no.19). Sadler's mother is also currently fighting breast cancer.
Winning is certainly on the horizon for this young talent. But for Hunter ending the season with his Mom currently past chemo therapy treatments and testing negative for cancer is a bigger victory than he and the entire Stewart family could hope for.
